A day in the life of a mother

This blog is about a day in the life of a frum (orthodox Jewish) mother with small children.

It's GroundHog Day

My life is starting to remind me of that movie "Groundhog Day". My kids are bored and camp is not starting until Wednesday and they are driving me bonkers. To be exact #3 is looking for mischief to get into, like dumping his cheerios and milk onto the carpeting, hiding #4's glasses, #2 and #3 wanting to play with the same toy at the same time. I am going to order in pizza tonight for dinner for everyone and am treating myself to a pedicure later tonight after hubby gets home. When I go back to work G-d willing in the future when all my kids are older and in school, I am going to add referee, chef, mediator, cleaning woman to my resume instead of just putting stay at home mom for 10+years :) (I probably won't go back to work until my kids are close to being teens and that won't befor another 10 years or so)

Anyway, laundry awaits to be done. #1 is coming home shortly as well and I got to get lunch ready as well. (Today is his last day of school and its only half a day.)

I am looking forward to camp starting next week. My 3 1/2 year old is extremely active and I think he is almost climbing the walls!!

In other news, my #4 ended up liking her new bed in the end and slept in it last night no problem.

BTW I am selling a cute size 24 months Osh Kosh top for girls NWOT. Click here if interested in bidding on it :)

In other news, Sunday/Monday is Canada day. Hubby is off Monday! Yay, I have the day off LOL. :)

Got to run, it's snack time for the kiddies!

Let's Fry an Egg on the Sidewalk

Today its 108 degrees outside with the humdity! I am staying indoors where its nice and cool. Thank G-d we do not live in our old apartment anymore or it would have been sweltering.

Today #4's bed came :) Her reaction: Crying, and saying I don't want it! Tonight should be really interesting when putting her to sleep LOL.

Not much else doing right now, except laundry. Must go put wash into dryer now!.

Visiting Day

Today I took #1 to the new school he will be attending in September to meet his new teacher. His aide from the other school met us there. It is a class of ten kids with one aide. #1 will need his own aide and the new teacher/#1's current aide told me he will have one for sept, it's not definite yet but very likely. (he needs the one to one not because of his learning disability but because of behaviour. Without the one to one assistance he will not always finish his tasks, or get out of his chair, etc.) he will be in Grade 2 in september. I am impressed with #1's computer skills. He managed to log into his school computer account from the other school we were visiting at. The aide and I just looked at each other in amazement after #1 managed to log in. Both of us are not even sure how he managed that. He was just fiddling around and the next thing we know, he's into his own account. He is my lil computer prodigy :)

#1 was very nervous going into the new school today but once he met everyone he seemed fine. There is another boy in the class who is also an Orthodox Jew so #1 will not be the only frum kid, which will be good for him, to make a friend he has a lot i common with. I got the impression the teacher may have been frum growing up but isn't now but I am not certain. I had mentioned to him, since you already have another orthodox student in your class, you probably already know about kosher. He told me he grew up wearing a kippa till he was Bar Mitzvah, and is fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish, and taught English for a year in Israel. he also knew to call #1 by his hebrew name without me having to ask him. (easy to figure out if you know his English one).
Even though I am slightly apprehensive about #1 starting over in a new school, G-d willing, it seems next year will be a good year. (this one was good too :)

It's a Bargain

Today my co-op had a street sale. I am totally addicted to going to garage sales, and had a field day :) At one of my neighbors, I bought a giant clifford dog, (not a real one :P), 2 giant stuffed bears, a stuffed flower, and a little tykes yellow school bus all for five dollars, and they are all in like new condition. At another house I bought a yellow dump truck. Then at another house I bought a webkinz pegasus for 1 dollar (they are usually 18) and it is in perfect brand new condition. :)

I remember, from when I was little, my grandma visiting from Florida during the summer, and my dad used to take her to all the garage sales in the neighborhood. She inspired my love of bargain hunting LOL. :)

Anyway, after the garage sale, the Bubbe took #1 and #2 for new shoes for the summer, and now #2 is going to a B-day party soon, and then I am taking #2 and #4 for a hair cut. :)

Busy day.

I have that Weird Al song about Ebay stuck in my head now LOL. (the line about the world wide garage sale). Also reminds me that he is coming to Toronto's Massey Hall July 10. By the time I realized it, all the good seats were bought out :(( I'm disappointed. I really wanted to go, hubby wasn't so interested, but I think I could have convinced him.. Oh well.

No more teachers, no more books....

Today was #2's last day of junior kindergarten, and now her summer vacation begins. Camp doesn't start until July 4th. She got her report card and a book with aleph bais activity sheets and stickers. Every day (except Shabbos of course) we have to go over a sheet, and the sound each letter makes, and she gets a sticker for each page she completes. It's so she won't forget what she learned this year, and also so she will go into Senior Kindergarten knowing what each sound the letters in the aleph bais makes.

#3 will also be going to summer camp and starting junior kindergarten in September IY"H. #1 will be staying home with me this summer, as well as #4 and #5. #1 is starting grade 2 in September. I can't believe how time flies. I am taking him on Monday to meet his teacher for september, as he is switching schools to one that is closer. his aide from his other school is meeting us there.

Well, got to go get ready for shabbos now!

Bye bye crib

Last night we went and bought #4 a bed :) she is 2 1/2 years old now, and getting too big for the crib. I don't know anyone who needs it so I am just going to disassemble it and store it in the basement. Maybe one day long into the future, I'll need it for grandkids (IY"H), :) Next year, I would like to buy a trundle bed or high riser for #5/#2. #2's bed was hubby's grandma's daybed, but its getting up there in years and there is no way to fit 3 full sized beds into one room. A trundle bed makes sense. I don't like bunk beds and have only heard negative things from people I know who have them.

Anyway, #4's bed is due next Tuesday IY"H :)

Full of Hot Air

Hmmm....I think my air condioner is on the fritz. For the past few weeks, and this seems to only happen on Shabbos, my air conditioner does not shut off, and goes from running cold air to room temperature air and literallly runs the whole shabbos, until I manually shut it off, after havdalah. Usually by the next day it goes back to normal. Except today of course. It starts off cool and then turns warmish. The air conditioner guy the propery manager called to do the yearly check suggested it should be replaced. but I doubt it will happen. come to think of it, the air conditioner has been screwy since the first day we moved in. I wonder what is causing the trouble though. I will have to put a work order in tomorrow and beg the office to call in the air conditioner guy again.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, NO, its Batwoman!!!!

One could say I do not lead a boring life at all. The park behind my inlaws' house has bats at night. Lots of times, when we're walking back from a meal at hubby's parents, at night, we hear the high pitched *beep* noises of the bats. Last night, while walking home from picking up something from there, (it was actually dusk) something flew in my face, that was brown, and it nearly knocked my glasses off my face. It hurt a bit too. I did not get a good look at what it was, it all happened very fast. But I heard the *beep* noise coming from a short distance away. So I started to worry it might have been a bat that flew into my face. this morning, I woke up and called telehealth and they told me to to the ER. Ontario, being Ontario, has too long of a wait to the ER and I didn't bother going. So I went into an urgent care clinic. The doc there said my face is slightly swollen where the bat flew into me but he could not see a break in the skin, so I didn't need rabies shots. he told me to phone public health, since they are the ones in charge of that sort of thing and also have the vaccine. So I called public health, the lady there was so nice and reassuring, and she went out of her way to get someone higher up to speak to me too and call me on my cell. They told me to see my own famiily doc for a second opinion, and that if need be, they could get a rabies vaccine to him by this afternoon. She said the bats teeth are razor sharp and its sometimes hard to notice a break in the skin. She also told me there have been five cases of rabid bats this year in the area. My own family doc could not see any break in the skin. I trust him and feel more reassured, but to be honest, I am still slightly worried still. that whole thing totally just freaked me out. A bat..sheesh.

I'm Baaaack!!

I have not fallen into oblivion. :) I have just been incredibly busy but now that things are settled into a  routine (as much as they can be with 5), I feel like posting again. :) So, what have I been up to, you ask? (about 5 feet :)  ok, that was corny of me...Just basically running around like crazy running errands, etc.  My #3, who will be 4 years old in November, is like 3 kids rolled into one little body. He is officially toilet trained, since last shabbos, and has now found a hobby with seeing what can be flushed down the toilet. Today he has managed to clog both our toilets. He is especially talented, what can I say? :) I had one plumber here today, who discovered our toilet in the basement had a cardboard puzzle piece wedged in. The plumber had to take off the toilet and use some interesting looking tools to retrieve the piece. If it wasn't covered with disgusting toilet water, I would save it, its's worth about $125. sigh.. I have another plumber coming tomorrow to discover what's plugging the upstairs toilet. I am pretty sure #3 has managed to flush the plastic thing that holds the toilet paper in place.

As far as the other kiddies, they are well B"H.  My oldest has come an amazingly long way this  year (for those of you who don't know/remember, my #1 has Asperger's syndrome, and ADHD) I am so proud of him. I can't believe my baby will be 7 in October, heck, I can't believe I am going to be 30 in September. I am having a hard time with that LOL.  I still feel 20, and remember my college days of fruit bowling in the hallway LOL. It makes me feel nostalgic about my younger years (not that 30 is really old, but its no longer very young). I can't believe it's been 12 years since I have graduated high school.   In any case, I think I might be a bit depressed on my 30th birthday (Sept. 28  in case anyone wants to buy me a present to cheer me up LOL :) This year my Hebrew birthday and English birthday are on the same day (second day Succos)

What else have I been up to? Well, I haven't visiting my old stomping grounds in almost 5 years, (New Jersey), so we are tentatively making plans to visit IY"H at the end of December.  Now I have to really work hard at losing the rest of the pregnancy weight. :)

Not much else doing, I just went to the library and am currently reading a medical book written by a surgeon.  It's kind of like a behind the scene look at the hospital.  Musically, I have started listening to a lot of "Weird Al" Yankovic. His music is very funny and makes me laugh, its a good pick me up, like on a day like today when a certain 3 1/2 year old has managed to plug up both toilets in the house. Sigh..

Movie wise, I really want to see Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, and also the new Spiderman 3 movie. Realistically, I probably won't see it until its on DVD.

Well, that's all the adventure for today.  :) Will post more soon (this time I will update my blog before a year has past LOL :)
